First Families of Logan County, Kentucky
The "First Families of Logan County" project was held in 2017 in conjunction with the 225th birthday celebration of Logan County's creation. Numerous individuals participated, and their ancestors fit the criteria on the list below.
In recognition of the 250th anniversary of American Independence and the 234th year of Logan County’s existence, the Logan County Genealogical Society has extended the First Families of Logan County, Kentucky, project. A certificate suitable for framing will be issued to all who can prove their ancestor was in Logan County by 1820 or earlier. Since Logan County covered most of western KY below the Ohio River, west of the Green River, and north of the Tennessee line, all ancestors within this parent county at one time are included.
To qualify, the applicant must be directly descended from an ancestor here by 1820 and provide proof of ancestry by official records. Records accepted as proof are birth, death, marriage, probate or will, church, cemetery, funeral or obituary, land records, deeds, tax lists, court cases, military, newspaper, Bible, old private documents, family and county histories published with the documentation listed, city or county directories, and census. Certificates are $15.00; separate copies for children are $5.00 with proof of kinship and $5.00 for shipping/handling unless picked up at the Logan County Archives.
Applications do not require Kentucky residency. Each generation listed from applicant to ancestor must be proven by including a copy of a document that links one generation to the next. For example, an applicant's birth certificate listing his/her parents and then a will or census record that shows the grandfather was the parent to the second-generation ancestor, continuing down to the qualifying ancestor.
All applications and verifying material become the property of the Logan County Genealogical Society and may be used to help others research their lineage. Send photocopies of proof papers; do not send original records. The application form is available above and can be requested by emailing logancokyarchives@gmail.com or picked up at the Logan County Archives in Russellville.
Completed applications, verifying materials, and fees should be dropped off or mailed to:
